Physiotherapist warned: “Posture disorder can cause serious problems”

Physiotherapist Nur Özkalay stated that posture disorder is a common problem in the society. Stating that especially school-age children frequently encounter these problems, Özkalay emphasized that working at a desk and carrying heavy bags cause posture disorders in children. He said that this situation starts in childhood and continues as posture disorder in later ages.

“If these problems are not corrected, serious problems such as back flattening may occur in later ages,” Özkalay said.

Pointing out that posture disorder can lead to disorders such as kyphosis, lordosis and scoliosis, Özkalay stated that these conditions are treatable. He stated that especially early diagnosis and intervention help to achieve better results.

Noting that in scoliosis, if the angle is intervened before it grows, an effective treatment process can be initiated in children and young people, Özkalay said, “Early diagnosis and treatment improves quality of life. Because pain may continue to increase over time. The settlement of the bone structure at an advanced age makes it difficult to change some problems. Therefore, early diagnosis is life-saving.”

Stating that working hours should not exceed 7 hours for individuals working at a desk, Özkalay said, “For example, it is recommended that they walk for 10 minutes when they work at a desk for 1 hour.”

Özkalay also emphasized that it is important that the chair they use is orthopedic, that a riser is placed under the computer screen and that the angle of the neck is maintained.

Özkalay added that various exercises would also be useful in preventing posture disorders.
