Chest Diseases Specialist Dr. Saliha Ercan Bütün said that despite the increasing use of antibiotics, pneumonia (pneumonia) still causes high morbidity and mortality rates in the community.
Stating that pneumonia, which is a common problem in health, is the medical name of pneumonia, known as inflammation of the lung, Liv Hospital Samsun Chest Diseases Clinic Specialist. Dr. Saliha Ercan Bütün said, “This disease, which is usually caused by various microbes such as bacteria, viruses or fungi, is more common in children, people over the age of 65 and people with chronic diseases. Pneumonia may indicate serious diseases such as lung cancer.”

Underlining that despite the increase in the use of antibiotics, pneumonia in the community still causes high morbidity and mortality rates, Uzm. Dr. Ercan said, “In Turkey, pneumonia ranked 15th with a prevalence of 1.15 percent according to household surveys. Risk factors include age, chronic diseases and smoking. Fever, cough, expectoration and chest pain are the most common symptoms of pneumonia. More serious symptoms such as shortness of breath and loss of consciousness can also occur. Antibiotics, hydration and rest are commonly used in treatment. The duration of treatment may vary depending on the severity and cause of the disease.”
Stating that control of underlying diseases, hygiene, vaccinations and smoking control are important, Uzm. Dr. Ercan said, “Pneumococcal vaccine and flu vaccine are recommended especially for risk groups. Pneumonia is usually a disease that heals quickly. Controls by the physician after treatment are important. Pneumonia-like symptoms may indicate serious diseases such as lung cancer. In suspicious cases, a pulmonologist should be consulted. Early diagnosis and correct treatment are of great importance for our health.”
Uzm. Dr. Saliha Ercan Bütün added that the disease is responsible for a significant portion of hospital admissions, treatment costs and deaths.
