Pregnant women prepare to become conscious mothers

In the pregnant school serving at Bursa City Hospital, trainings are given for the prenatal, birth and postpartum period in order for expectant mothers to have a healthy pregnancy process.

Expectant mothers show great interest in the pregnancy school, which was put into operation within Bursa City Hospital in order to teach pregnant women to have information about prenatal and postnatal period, to overcome the fear of normal birth and to cope with problems such as birth pain. The team of obstetricians, midwives, physiotherapists, dieticians and social workers working at the pregnancy school prepares expectant mothers for healthy delivery. In addition to expectant mothers, their spouses, mothers and mothers-in-law are also invited to the trainings to raise awareness about the process.

Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist at Bursa City Hospital Dr. Elif Öğe, who gave information about the work carried out in the pregnancy school, pointed out that thanks to the trainings, anxiety in pregnant women decreased and the frequency and desire for normal birth increased. Stating that the main purpose of the trainings is to provide information to pregnant women about pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium, Uzm. Dr. Öğe said, “With the trainings we provide in our pregnancy school, we inform our pregnant women from the first months. We have a lesson plan consisting of 5 parts in total. From the first weeks of pregnancy, our pregnant women are emotionally prepared for motherhood. We also prepare them physically for birth and postpartum with exercise programs. These trainings are given by experts in their field and they receive first-hand information. Within the scope of these trainings, non-drug methods, exercises, yoga and relaxation techniques are used effectively to cope with birth pains.”

In addition to the obstetrician, midwives, physiotherapists, dieticians and social workers take part in the pregnancy school. Dr. Öğe said, “We invite all our pregnant women to the pregnancy school. We want them to attend our classes at the pregnancy school for healthy individuals and healthy births. Because education is essential for the healthy development of normal birth.”

Midwife Kübra Çavuş, who is in charge of the pregnancy school, emphasized that in addition to expectant mothers, they also provide trainings to their wives, mothers, mothers-in-law or people who will support them in their environment. Stating that they aim to manage this process in the best way by preparing effective environmental conditions during pregnancy and the period after pregnancy, Çavuş said, “For this, we stand in front of companion support as much as possible in our breastfeeding classes, newborn trainings or birth classes. In such trainings, we invite not only our pregnant women but also their relatives.”

Selcan Tokgöz, who received training at the pregnancy school and had the happiness of holding her baby in her arms 3 months ago, said, “When I came here, I was nervous at first. I participated in exercises and theoretical lessons. It gave me confidence to know that I was not alone in the process with other mothers who received training here, and that there were others who went through what I went through with me. I tried to apply what I learned in childbirth. I have a three-month-old daughter. In this process, I can reach the team at any time and get constant support from them. I think this place is a great chance. I hope it will become widespread throughout the country and lucky mothers like me will hold their babies.”

Veli Tokgöz, who attended the trainings with his wife, said, “I also attended our school during my wife's pregnancy and received trainings. Thanks to what I learned here, our relationship with my child has become tighter. He is very close to his father. We learned in the trainings we received that we don't need to be afraid of this. Our relationship with my baby is progressing in a very healthy way. We thank the pregnancy school.”

Zeynep Güngör, who stated that she started the pregnancy school with the guidance of her doctor, said as follows:

“I started attending the trainings. I came to exercise training. One week is yoga, one week is pilates and it is very useful. Afterwards, I attended the nutrition training. I learned how I should eat and started to eat accordingly. I overcame the fear of childbirth in the birth training. It was very useful for me. In the breastfeeding training, I learned in detail how to breastfeed and what to do. I attended the newborn training with my husband. My husband also learned everything about how to wash the baby and how to burp the baby. It was very useful for us. I was very pleased. I am glad there is a pregnancy school. I learned everything very well and prepared myself more confidently.”
