Acıbadem Kayseri Hospital Pediatrics Specialist Dr. Merve Karaca said that premature babies have the capacity to live a healthy life and said, “It is important to know the risks of prematurity and to follow up accordingly.”

Stating that a normal pregnancy is 40 weeks, Acıbadem Kayseri Hospital Pediatrics Specialist Dr. Merve Karaca said that babies born under 37 weeks are considered premature. Stating that 1 out of every 10 babies born in the world is born prematurely, Karaca said, “A healthy life and a healthy pregnancy process begins with a normal, timely and healthy birth. However, one out of every 10 babies is born prematurely. In 2022, this rate is predicted to be 12.9 percent in our country.”

“There are many reasons leading to premature birth”

Emphasizing that premature birth has characteristics, Dr. Karaca said, “In order to call a baby premature, it must be born before 37 weeks. A normal birth process is 40 weeks on average. The lower the birth week, the more health problems that may arise in premature babies. Since there can be many problems associated with prematurity, it is very important to know the risks of prematurity and to follow up the pregnancy accordingly. There are many reasons that lead to premature birth. These are considered risks. Advanced maternal age, young maternal age, multiple pregnancy, mother's infections during pregnancy, chronic diseases, mother's use of substances such as smoking, alcohol and drugs during pregnancy, frequent pregnancies, i.e. less time between 2 pregnancies, having a history of premature birth increases the risk of prematurity. However, some of the causes of prematurity are genetic and environmental factors that cannot be changed. Prematurity follow-up is important, so it becomes very important to follow up the pregnancy in detail in cases that seem risky in terms of premature birth, and in such cases, it becomes very important to have medical equipment and specialized teams in appropriate environments that can intervene when a premature baby is born.”

“Premature baby follow-up should be done more frequently”

Stating that premature babies have a healthy life capacity, Karaca continued his words as follows:

“Only these babies need support. In reliable hands, with good care, premature babies can overcome the problems waiting for them. Premature babies may experience more neurological, developmental and many other health problems than normal babies. These babies can be followed up more frequently, followed up in neonatal intensive care units until they overcome certain problems, and their chances of leading a normal life can be increased.”
