Making a statement on November 17, World Prematurity Day, Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University Training and Research Hospital Neonatology Neonatology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halil Değirmencioğlu said that November 17 is celebrated as World Prematurity Day every year in order to draw attention to the difficulties experienced by premature babies and their families, to raise awareness and to support the struggle of these babies to hold on to life.

Stating that premature birth is a critical health problem that affects 1 out of every 10 babies worldwide and is one of the most important causes of neonatal mortality, Değirmencioğlu said: “World Prematurity Day was initiated in 2008 under the leadership of the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI) and November 17 was chosen in honor of the birthday of a premature baby. Today, the color purple, which is the symbol of this meaningful day, represents the commitment of premature babies to life and their fragile yet strong nature.”
