It should be checked that the vehicles meet the appropriate conditions, are regularly maintained and are safe enough.”
Prof. Dr. Tevfik Özlü stated that vehicle cleaning and regular disinfection should be carried out in the buses carrying students and said, “With the opening of schools, school buses started to carry our students intensively. Our students may not be as careful as adults to protect themselves from the dangers that await them. For this reason, it is the responsibility of school management, national education directorate, local authorities and school bus inspection commissions to protect them. In terms of student health, the safety, cleanliness and hygiene of school buses and compliance with traffic rules and the rules set out in the Regulation on School Service Vehicles are of vital importance. First of all, school buses must be carefully selected and frequently inspected. It should be checked that the vehicles meet the appropriate conditions, are regularly maintained and are sufficiently safe. Appropriate air conditioning should be provided inside the vehicle. Vehicle cleaning and regular disinfection of in-vehicle surfaces should be carried out. In order to avoid exhaust fumes (carbon monoxide) poisoning, the vehicle should not be operated in a closed environment. Noise and sound pollution should not be allowed in the vehicle during transportation. Masks should be available for students who are sick, have fever and cough to use in the service. Tobacco products and e-cigarettes must not be used in vehicles carrying students. Guides must be present in the vehicles to accompany the students as they get on and off and during the journey, to prevent them from possible dangers and to prevent them from doing wrong and harming each other. Necessary measures should be taken to ensure that the vehicle is not moved before the student is seated, that students are not transported standing up, that there is enough space for each student, that strangers are not allowed in the service vehicles, that students with large age and class differences are not transported together, and that students are calm and disciplined in the vehicle. After unloading, the vehicle should be checked to ensure that no student is forgotten in the vehicle. Safe boarding and alighting must be ensured. Vehicles should move in such a way that students will not be harmed by traffic and disrupt the flow of traffic while getting on and off. Precautions should be taken to prevent the student getting out of the vehicle from crossing the street in a dangerous way or suddenly jumping into traffic, and lighted lamps and signs should be used. Waiting points should be determined appropriately so that our students are not harmed in wet, rain, heat and sun.”
