Dietitian Beyza Tağraf from Medipol University Hospital explained the relationship between curcumin and piperine, which have become popular in recent days, and neurological diseases. Dietitian Tağraf said, “Scientific research in recent years reveals that curcumin and piperine may be promising natural compounds in the treatment of a number of diseases that affect neurons in the human brain, which we call neurodegenerative.” While curcumin is obtained from ginger root, research has revealed that piperine is naturally found in black pepper.
While studies on the brain have always attracted the attention of the society, in recent years, especially the positive effects of curcumin and piperine on brain health have aroused great curiosity in people. Medipol Mega University Hospital Memory Center Dietitian Beyza Tağraf stated that curcumin and piperine have great benefits on brain health. Dietitian Tağraf stated that curcumin reduces beta-amyloid plaque accumulation especially in Alzheimer's disease and thus has the potential to protect nerve cells, while piperine is both good for nerve cells and facilitates the digestion of curcumin.
Curcumin Promising compound in brain health
Stating that curcumin is obtained from ginger, Tağraf said, “Scientific research in recent years reveals that curcumin and piperine may be promising natural compounds in the treatment of a number of diseases that affect neurons in the human brain, which we call neurodegenerative. Curcumin is a polyphenol derived from ginger and is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. Especially in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain and increased neuronal inflammation play an important role. Recent studies have examined how curcumin may affect these processes. Thanks to its antioxidant properties, curcumin is thought to have the potential to protect nerve cells by reducing oxidative stress in the brain.”
Found naturally in black pepper
Noting that piperine is naturally found in black pepper, Dietitian Tağraf continued as follows:
“Piperine is known to have anti-inflammatory effects on nerve cells and may slow the progression of neurodegenerative processes. It is thought that piperine reduces neuronal inflammation and thus has the potential to protect the health of nerve cells. In addition to all this, curcumin is a difficult substance to be absorbed by the body. It has been proven to be better absorbed in the presence of piperine. Therefore, consumption with piperine is the most effective way.”
Expert support is a must
Stating that expert support is needed to protect against the side effects as well as the benefits of curcumin and piperine, Dietitian Tağraf said, “Although important findings have been obtained, expert support is essential about the effective doses, long-term effects and possible side effects of curcumin and piperine. As a result, it is thought that natural compounds such as curcumin and piperine may potentially offer a new approach in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.”
