“Raw honey relieves cough symptoms”

Pediatrician Prof. Dr. Ayper Somer stated that unnecessary use of antibiotics leads to side effects and development of antimicrobial resistance in patients, and said that in a systematic review study that examined its effect on cough symptoms and included 14 scientific studies, it was observed that raw honey alleviated symptoms and reduced both cough frequency and severity compared to standard treatment.

“Supportive Treatment Days” took place in Van. At the scientific meeting attended by many health professionals, important names such as Prof. Dr. Ateş Kara, Prof. Dr. Ergin Çiftçi, Prof. Dr. Ayper Somer, Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ülker Altınel and Prof. Dr. Şirin Güven took part. BEE'O / BEE&YOU Medical and Marketing Director Reşat Kubilay İrkan also took part in the congress with his team in sessions covering many topics from probiotics to micronutrients for lifelong health. In the scientific program where the effect of raw honey and propolis on cough symptoms in children was also discussed, Pediatrician Prof. Dr. Ayper Somer shared valuable information on this subject with the participants.

Raw honey relieves cough symptoms

Pediatrician Prof. Dr. Ayper Somer said, “Upper respiratory tract infections are one of the most common reasons for visiting a doctor. However, even though it is known that antibiotics are not very effective in these infections, antibiotic treatment is still mostly applied. Unnecessary use of antibiotics leads to side effects and development of antimicrobial resistance in patients. In a systematic review study that examined the effect of raw honey on cough symptoms and included 14 scientific studies, raw honey alleviated symptoms and reduced both cough frequency and severity compared to standard treatment.”

Anatolian Propolis effect on cough

BEE'O / BEE&YOU Medical Director Reşat Kubilay İrkan noted that Propolis is a completely natural bee product with strong antioxidant and antimicrobial effects that bees collect from leaves, stems and buds of plants. Irkan said that propolis, which has high polyphenol content and special bioactive components, is a natural food that shows positive effects on respiratory tract problems such as bronchitis, bronchiolitis and asthma thanks to its high anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. “Scientific studies show that propolis shortens the duration of the disease and reduces the frequency of drug use by showing high antioxidant effect with valuable polyphenols in its composition. A scientific study investigating the effect of propolis on cough symptoms was conducted on 430 children with upper respiratory tract infections. In this 12-week study, participants were divided into two groups. The first group consumed a mixture containing 50 mg propolis and 10 mg vitamin C per day. The second group did not take any propolis. The results of the study showed that children who consumed the propolis mixture had significantly reduced fever and cough symptoms, shorter duration of illness and fewer total sick days. These results show that propolis supports the alleviation of symptoms in children with its natural bioactive components.”
