Prof. Dr. Ahmet Egemin Sayın said that the information that sports in childhood can negatively affect growth and personal development is wrong, on the contrary, it supports growth and development.
Düzce University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Cardiology Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Egemen Sayın emphasized the importance of sports for a healthy life on September 29, World Heart Day and shared remarkable information. Stating that regular exercise is effective in the prevention and management of heart diseases, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, obesity and various cancers, Dr. Sayın underlined that regular exercise helps people to maintain their physical strength and skills that decrease with age, increase their quality of life, maintain their mental health, weight control and a healthy appearance.
“This information is wrong”
Stating that a person can start doing sports from the first years of his/her life for a healthy and quality life, Lecturer. Prof. Egemen Sayın said, “In the first 3 years of life, swimming is the only option. Babies can swim even in the first months of life. At the age of 3-5, children begin to learn the rules, recognize the tools, develop coordination and balance; these ages can be the first starting ages for gymnastics and running sports. The 6-10 age range is the age when maximum development and coordination potential is reached. Factors such as children's interests, physical characteristics, environmental conditions and socio-economic status should be taken into consideration when choosing a sport. The information that sports practiced during childhood can have a negative impact on growth and personal development is incorrect; on the contrary, it supports growth and development.
I recommend regular exercise at almost any age as it helps to maintain physical and mental health. In addition to the beneficial effects I mentioned at the beginning, exercise/sports can also have negative effects such as serious injury/death, being expensive, and fatigue.”
Sports can be practiced at any age
Stating that people should prefer exercise/sports branches in accordance with their age and the recommendations of their doctor if they have diseases, Dr. Sayın emphasized that healthy adults can do any sport in line with their interest/desire unless they have a health disability and that there is no proven superiority between sports branches. Saying that healthy and elderly people can continue to exercise in the sports branch they have been doing for a long time and have experience in, Dr. Sayın stated that since the risk of injury increases in advanced ages, it would be more appropriate for people who have no previous exercise / sports experience to prefer sports branches such as walking, jogging at a light pace, cycling and swimming, which are lighter exercises.
The effects of sport on mental health
“Exercise is important for people with psychiatric illness; it not only improves our mood, concentration and alertness, but also improves our cardiovascular and general physical health,” said Dr. Sayın, adding that people who exercise regularly will have better mental health and mood and lower rates of psychiatric illness.
“Unfortunately, the number of people who exercise regularly and eat healthy is very, very small”
“Although it is known that sedentary life is a modifiable risk factor for many diseases, unfortunately, the number of people who do regular exercise / sports and eat healthy is very, very few,” said Dr. Lecturer Egemen Sayın. Prof. Egemen Sayın added that the increase in the frequency of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases and cancers over time proves that sedentary lifestyle is increasing.
Effects of the digital age
Sharing the information that in 2016, it was accepted that 81 percent of adolescents aged 11-17 worldwide were not physically active, Düzce University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Cardiology, Dr. Assist. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Egemen Sayın said, “The Covid-19 pandemic has made the situation worse. Unfortunately, chronic diseases started to be seen at a young age. Physical inactivity in children and adolescents has become a global public health priority. I wish everyone to exercise regularly at least 3 times a week, at least 3 times a week, in accordance with their health, age and disability, including resistance exercises if possible.”
