Speaking about the inability to ensure quality sleep with the increase in air temperatures, Eskişehir City Hospital Otorhinolaryngology Department Specialist and Sleep Center Supervisor Prof. Dr. Vural Fidan said, “In cases where the average temperature is above 22 degrees, both the quality and duration of sleep are severely damaged.”
Air temperatures above seasonal norms throughout the country continue to negatively affect life. The sweltering heat, which is especially effective in the evening hours, prevents quality sleep. Failure to reach the duration of quality sleep with the effect of hot weather both negatively affects life and causes health problems. Stating that the room temperature should not exceed 22 degrees in order to ensure quality sleep, Eskişehir City Hospital Ear Nose and Throat Department Specialist and Sleep Center Supervisor Prof. Dr. Vural Fidan said, “In cases where the temperature in our environment is above 22 degrees on average, both the quality and duration of sleep are damaged and damaged.”
“In environments above 22 degrees, both the quality and duration of sleep are highly damaged”
Stating that sleep modes of cooling systems can be used to prevent the room temperature from rising above 22 degrees, Prof. Dr. Fidan said, “Unfortunately, with the increase in temperatures, we have serious problems with falling asleep and maintaining sleep. We need to provide sleep hygiene in order to ensure this process of starting and maintaining sleep. One of the most important of these is unfortunately the temperature in our environment. In cases where the temperature in our environment is above an average of 22 degrees, both the quality and duration of sleep are severely damaged and damaged. In this regard, it is possible to make use of air conditioning products and some devices in order to normalize this. The devices have sleep modes so that we can sleep more comfortably, especially in the evenings when it is hot. It is possible to use these devices in these sleep modes.”
“Caffeinated drinks disrupt people's sleep and make it difficult to fall asleep”
Stating that especially the consumption of caffeinated drinks makes it difficult to fall asleep, Prof. Dr. Vural Fidan said that it is important to consume warm milk 1 hour before going to sleep. Stating that the clothes worn during sleep are also a factor in sleep quality, Prof. Dr. Fidan used the following statements:
“In addition, we do not want tea, coffee and caffeinated foods to be consumed too much, especially in people who have problems in this sleep process, who have problems with falling and maintaining sleep. Unfortunately, theophylline in tea, the substances we call caffeine in coffee and caffeinated drinks and foods disrupt the sleep of the person and make it difficult to fall asleep. In these people, especially the products we use in the environment where we sleep or the pajama-style materials we wear should also have certain properties. It would be better for us not to use synthetic materials. It will be healthier for us to prefer cotton products. We need to stop feeding 3-4 hours before bedtime. In other words, it is definitely much more difficult for us to fall asleep with a full stomach. Unfortunately, this is also the case with children. If the child does not have allergies, it is possible to use things such as warm milk 1 hour before bedtime to increase the ability of the person to fall asleep. Likewise, it will be possible to use herbal teas that can increase this in adults, especially 1 hour before bedtime. This will enable the person to both fall asleep and maintain it.”
