Rotablation treatment for calcified vascular occlusions

Thanks to this application, which is new in the world, the dense calcification in the vein is first cleaned by shaving with an intravascular tool covered with diamond powder, and then a balloon and stent are inserted. The treatment success of the stent inserted with this procedure increases considerably.

Giving information about the treatment, Cardiology Specialist Dr. İsmail Polat said, “Today, we will perform rotablation with the rotablator device on four patients, two of whom are from an external center and two of whom applied directly to our center. We first balloon the blocked vessels and then insert stents. Unfortunately, we cannot do this for some of our patients because their veins are very calcareous and very hard. In these patients, it is not possible to pass the balloon and stent and open the stent under optimal conditions. In these cases, we are currently performing rotablation, which is a new technology. We also perform rotablation with a rotablator device. The device has a tip coated with diamond powder. We transmit the device, which rotates on its own axis at 150 to 200 thousand revolutions per minute, like a drill, to that calcified, petrified clogged vein area through the groin and we clean this calcareous area by shaving this area. Then we perform a balloon and stent procedure and discharge the patient the next day after following the patient in the coronary intensive care unit for a day.”

Polat said, “The procedure is performed in the angiography laboratory. The procedure can be performed in your groin or arm vein. Plastic tubes (catheters) are inserted into your heart vessels through sheaths placed in these vessels. With the help of these plastic tubes, a rotablator device is advanced into the stenosis. During and after the shaving procedure, normal angiography is performed and the condition of the stenosis and changes are also examined.”
