Stating that germs are transmitted by droplet, airway, contact or oral route in the nursery and school environment, Niğde Ömer Halisdemir Training and Research Hospital Pediatrics Specialist Dr. Ruken Tekdemir; explained what should be done to protect school-going children from infection.
Tekdemir; “We see more infectious diseases in children who start kindergarten and school, especially in two years, but as time passes, the amount of infection decreases as their immune systems strengthen. Vaccines are primarily important to protect children from these infections. The vaccination program prepared by the Ministry of Health should be given to every child. Vaccines are important in terms of protection.”
“Hand washing should become a habit”
Ruken Tekdemir said that the child should pay attention to hygiene in order to protect against infections, emphasizing that one of the most important points in preventing the transmission of infections is hand hygiene; “Hand hygiene at school and out of school should become a habit for every child. In this regard, both teachers and parents should cooperate to help children acquire this habit. Infection transmission in schools occurs through oral, droplet or contact. The best protection is hand washing with plenty of water and soap. Hand washing in common areas, after games, before and after feeding should become a habit for children.”
“The sick child should rest”
Underlining that children with symptoms of illness should rest at home, Tekdemir said: “Children who show signs of illness should definitely rest at home so that the child's recovery will accelerate and other children will be protected. It is also important to teach children to cover their mouths with their arms when coughing and sneezing, thus preventing diseases transmitted by droplets. Other things we can do for our children outside of school are healthy eating, exercise, outdoor sports activities, regular sleep and avoiding exposure to tobacco products.”
