Kayseri DOKTORÖZ Eye and Surgical Laser Center Chief Physician and Vitreoretinal Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Abdullah Özkırış gave information about smart lenses.
Smart lenses have been on the agenda recently and provide comfort to patients with distant near or both far and near vision problems. After the lens that has lost its visual function in the eye is surgically removed, lenses called “smart lenses” are placed in its place. The lenses, which have been preferred for suitable patients in cataract surgeries for about 10 years, provide a solution to the vision problem. Kayseri DOKTORÖZ Eye and Surgical Laser Center Chief Physician and Vitreoretinal Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Abdullah Özkırış; gave information about smart lenses.
“Smart lenses” instead of lenses that lose their visual function
Smart lenses are effective enough to solve patients' vision problems. The aim here is to improve the quality of the patient's vision as much as possible by applying an artificial lens instead of the lens that is congenital in the eye and has lost its function. Smart lenses are applied for patients who have cataract disease in their eyes and therefore need surgery. For this, suitable patients should be preferred and smart lens surgery should be performed.
Appropriate patient selection is important
Stating that patient selection is very important, Kayseri DOKTORÖZ EYE and SURGICAL LASER CENTER Chief Physician and Vitreoretinal Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Abdullah ÖZKIRIŞ continued his words as follows. These smart lenses can be applied to patients with cataract disease or high myopia or hyperopia. However, smart lens applications are not preferred for patients with diabetes, yellow spot, advanced astigmatism, strabismus, kerotoconus and corneal problems. These state-of-the-art lenses implanted into the eye are available in three types: bifocal (bifocal) and trifocal (trifocal). To use smart lenses, the patient must first undergo standard cataract surgery and the patient's original lens must be removed and replaced with the appropriate lens. The operation takes about 8-10 minutes like standard cataract surgery. No stitches are applied to the eye during this operation and patients are discharged on the same day.
Improves the patient's quality of life
Patients with trifocal lenses can read books, use computers and watch television without glasses after surgery. The patient's quality of life is also improved in this way. Trifocal lenses should be recommended to suitable patients and the risk of unnecessary surgery should be eliminated.
