Dr. Mehmet Emin Derin, who works as a Rheumatology Specialist at Sivas Numune Hospital, made statements on October 12, World Arthritis Day.
Stating that arthritis is a general name given to joint inflammation, Uzm. Dr. Derin said, “Arthritis manifests itself with pain, swelling, redness and limitation of movement in the joints. If not properly diagnosed and treated, it can cause joint destruction. Contrary to popular belief, rheumatic diseases and arthritis are more common before the age of 50. If we ask in which cases inflammatory arthritis can be considered; features such as morning stiffness in the joint, pain that decreases with movement, swelling are seen in inflammatory rheumatism, while in non-inflammatory arthritis (osteoarthritis, i.e. calcification), this condition is in the form of pain that increases with movement and when using the joint. Arthritis lasting longer than 6 weeks is called chronic arthritis. There are many diseases that can cause arthritis. More than 150 rheumatic diseases have been identified. The number, location and characteristics of joint involvement may vary according to the diseases. For example, the most common cause of inflammatory arthritis in the community is rheumatoid arthritis. While rheumatoid arthritis mostly affects the joints of the fingers and wrists, Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF), which is common in our country and especially in our city, can affect large joints such as the hip and knee. Although rheumatic diseases primarily involve joints, it is important to remember that they can also affect many organs such as the skin, kidneys, eyes and lungs. These differences are necessary and important for correct diagnosis and treatment. Today, highly effective treatments are available and rheumatic diseases can be kept under control.”
Stating that smoking is an important factor in the development of rheumatoid arthritis, Uzm. Dr. Derin said, “The clear cause of rheumatism is not clear. We can say genetic and environmental factors. The most important environmental factor that can be changed is smoking. It is known that smoking causes the development of rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, spa treatment, which is frequently on the agenda, is not recommended in the active inflammatory period. Our rheumatology outpatient clinics are at the service of our people for correct diagnosis, correct and complete treatment. I wish all our people a healthy and arthritis-free life.”
