Experts warned that smoking increases the risk of lung cancer by 10 to 30 times. It was pointed out that stomach cancer cases are most common in the Eastern Anatolia Region of the country.
Dancing with Cancer Association organized a press conference at a hotel in Ankara to introduce its digital information platform 'KDD ACADEMY' for Lung Cancer Awareness Month. At the meeting, information about cancer disease and cancer treatment was given by specialist doctors. Stating that they established 'KDD ACADEMY' in order for cancer patients and their relatives to get healthy information, Sevil Gürkan said, “We conducted a survey involving cancer patients and their relatives. We realized that our cancer patients lacked information about the process, so we established the KDD ACADEMY to provide our cancer patients with access to up-to-date and reliable information.”

Stating that smoking increases the risk of lung cancer, Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Umut Derici stated that they expect a 50 percent increase in the incidence and mortality rate of lung cancer in 2040 and said, “While one fifth of the world population was a smoker in 2020, young people make up a significant part of this population. Smoking increases the risk of lung cancer by 10 to 30 times.”
“Ensuring adequate nutrition is possible with close follow-up”
Emphasizing the importance of the dietary processes of cancer patients, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Diltaş Baş said, “Cancer patients experience weight loss and muscle loss due to malnutrition. Necessary medical nutrition support should be given to prevent this. It is possible to prevent weight loss, muscle loss and ensure adequate nutrition with close follow-up.”
“Psychological support strengthens the coping of patients and their families”
Expert Psychologist and Psychooncologist Sibel Cesur Akyunak pointed out the importance of cancer patients and their relatives receiving psychological support during the disease process and said:
“Psychological support is of vital importance for individuals struggling with cancer and their families. Psychological support during the cancer process helps to maintain both emotional and physical well-being during the challenging processes of the disease. This support strengthens how patients and their families cope with the disease.”

Speaking about stomach and esophageal (esophagus) cancer, Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. İsmail Ertürkise said, “Digestive system cancers are a type of cancer that we usually see in people over the age of 40-50. Early diagnosis of stomach and esophageal cancers saves lives. Stomach cancer cases are most common in the eastern region of our country.”
Public Health Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hülya Şirin gave information about Cancer Early Diagnosis and Screening Centers (KETEM) and said, “KETEMs, which started working with 11 centers in 2004, continue to serve with 381 centers, including 44 mobile vehicles as of the end of 2023. Screening tests for breast, cervical and colon cancers are provided free of charge at KETEMs. Our citizens should also benefit from these services, because early diagnosis saves lives.”
