“Social media has increased anger problems in society”

Pointing out that anger problems have increased in society in recent years, Psychologist Dilara Dalyan said, “The widespread use of social media, social uncertainties and economic problems stand out among the reasons for this increase. While social media allows individuals to express their instant emotions, it can also pave the way for negative interactions. In addition, major crises such as pandemics can increase people's stress levels and make anger more intense. All these factors increase the situations in which individuals have difficulty in anger management.”

Psychologist Dilara Dalyan from IAU VM Medical Park Florya Hospital made statements about anger control. Making the definition of anger control, Ps. Dalyan said, “Anger control is the ability of individuals to recognize, understand and express their feelings of anger appropriately. In psychology, anger is an emotional response and often occurs in response to threat, disappointment or loss. However, failure to manage this emotion in a healthy way can lead to harm both to oneself and to those around one. Therefore, anger management is an important skill that positively affects personal health and social relationships. Anger control is not only limited to the behaviors exhibited during anger; it also includes the process of understanding the source of this emotion, recognizing its triggers and developing strategies to cope with these emotions. At this point, anger management can help the individual develop emotional and social skills.”

“The fast pace of city life triggers outbursts of anger”

Stating that anger control is a very common issue in society, Ps. Dalyan said, “Stress factors encountered in daily life, pressures in business life and social interactions can increase the anger levels of individuals. In addition, especially the fast paces and uncertainties brought about by city life are important factors that trigger outbursts of anger. As a result, anger management problems have become more common in the general population.”

“Heartbeat accelerates, sweating and trembling may be observed”

Stating that the anger problem manifests itself with physical, emotional and behavioral symptoms, Ps. Dalyan said, “Physical symptoms include reactions such as accelerated heartbeat, sweating and trembling. Emotionally, the individual may feel restlessness, helplessness or irritability. Behaviorally, situations such as shouting, displaying aggressive attitudes and engaging in conflicts are observed. These symptoms may intensify in cases where anger is not under control.”

“There is a rise of anger in society”

Pointing out that anger problems have increased in society in recent years, Ps. “Among the reasons for this increase are the widespread use of social media, social uncertainties and economic problems. While social media allows individuals to express their instant emotions, it can also pave the way for negative interactions. In addition, major crises such as the pandemic process can increase people's stress levels and make anger more intense. All these factors increase the situations in which individuals have difficulty in anger management.”

“Suggestions for managing anger control”

Stating that several basic strategies can be applied to manage anger control, Ps. Dalyan shared the following information:

“First, individuals need to recognize their own anger triggers. Knowing in which situations the person feels more anger is an important step in coping with this emotion. Relaxation methods such as regular exercise, breathing techniques and meditation can have positive effects on anger control. Such methods help to reduce stress, allowing anger to be managed in a healthier way. In order to control anger, individuals need to develop effective coping strategies. Increasing problem-solving skills, developing the ability to empathize and using positive communication methods are critical in managing anger. When feelings of anger arise, it may be helpful for individuals to take some time to reflect and observe their feelings. This helps them avoid knee-jerk reactions.”

“Negatively affects mental health”

Stating that uncontrolled anger can be a symptom of many psychological disorders, Ps. Dalyan said, “For example, conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders and borderline personality disorder can make it difficult for individuals to manage their feelings of anger. Such disorders can negatively affect a person's mental health and increase anger outbursts. Therefore, anger problems should be taken seriously and necessary professional help should be sought.”

“Anger management treatment”

Noting that anger management treatment will be shaped according to the needs of the individual, Ps. Dalyan said, “Individual therapies, group therapies and behavioral therapies are among the effective methods for anger management. Therapists help individuals develop strategies to cope with anger, while also helping them to increase their emotional intelligence. Getting professional support helps individuals develop healthier coping mechanisms and manage their anger problems.”

“It may be a harbinger of stress disorders”

Reminding that frequent outbursts of anger are not limited to a single problem, but can be a harbinger of many psychological diseases, Ps. Dalyan said, “Various disorders such as depression, stress disorders, bipolar disorder and anti-social personality disorder can trigger anger outbursts. Therefore, when such symptoms are observed, it is extremely important for individuals to seek help from a professional expert. In conclusion, anger management is a critical issue for both individual mental health and social relationships. Raising awareness and encouraging professional support is vital for the overall health of both individuals and society. Anger can become an empowering emotion when managed correctly; otherwise, it can have devastating consequences. Therefore, training and awareness-raising activities on anger management should be considered as a part of modern life.”
