Medical Point Gaziantep Hospital Pediatrics Specialist Dr. Baver Demir gave information about breastfeeding week.
Pediatrician Dr. Demir said, “Breastfeeding is the most natural and effective nutrition method for the healthy development of babies. Breast milk contains all the nutrients babies need for the first six months, as well as antibodies and enzymes that strengthen their immune systems. For this reason, the World Health Organization recommends that babies be exclusively breastfed for the first six months and then continue breastfeeding for at least two years with additional foods.”
“Breastfeeding has numerous health benefits”
Explaining the benefits of breastfeeding, Dr. Demir said, “Breastfeeding has numerous health benefits. While breast milk protects babies against diseases, it also reduces the risk of nutritional disorders. Research shows that breastfed babies have fewer infections and illnesses compared to non-breastfeeding babies. In particular, the risk of common illnesses such as diarrhea, pneumonia and ear infections is significantly reduced by breastfeeding. Breastfeeding offers many benefits not only for babies but also for mothers. Regular breastfeeding helps mothers lose weight after childbirth and reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. In addition, breastfeeding has a positive effect on mothers' mental health. The hormones released during breastfeeding reduce stress levels and make mothers feel happier. However, the breastfeeding process can be fraught with difficulties for some mothers. Factors such as postpartum hormonal changes, fatigue and insufficient knowledge about breastfeeding can cause mothers to struggle during this period. In addition, common misconceptions about breastfeeding and social pressures also cause mothers to overcome the process with even more difficulty.”
Dr. Demir said, “The best start for raising healthy generations is breastfeeding. As Gaziantep Hospital, we will be very happy to see all mothers and families with us in this meaningful week. Together, let's emphasize the importance of breastfeeding and support each other to raise healthy and happy individuals. Let's not forget that breastfeeding is not only a form of nutrition; it is also a special process where feelings of love, commitment and trust are reinforced.”
