Stem cell application can stop joint aging

According to a World Health Organization (WHO) study, the average life expectancy in Turkey has increased to 78.6 years for both men and women. As the human life span has increased, the population has started to age and as they get older, more diseases have started to be encountered. Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Op. Dr. Harun Kütahya, who said that one of these diseases is joint disorders, emphasized that the age of the joints can be stopped even if the age progresses thanks to today's technology.

Joint pain has started to affect more and more people due to factors such as aging of the population, increase in obesity and decrease in movement. Emphasizing that the quality of life of people decreases due to the limitation of movement seen in the later stages of the disease, Medicana Konya Hospital Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Op. Dr. Harun Kütahya stated that they prevent the progression of many health problems with stem cell application in patients with early stage cartilage wear.

“It is possible to stop time with stem cell therapy”

Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Op. Dr. Harun Kütahya stated that stem cell therapy is performed to slow down the progression of cartilage damage in patients who have started cartilage damage in the early period, have painful joints but are too early for surgery or do not want to undergo surgery, and stated that the quality of life of most patients has improved thanks to stem cell application and said, “With stem cell application, time can be turned back in knee and joint diseases. In the past, orthopedics books used to teach that cartilage cannot be repaired when it is damaged. A patient with cartilage wear would be offered surgery options if the cartilage would wear out even more over time and if the complaints increased more due to this situation. Today, with stem cell application, cartilage can be reconstructed and returned to 10 years ago.”

Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Op. Dr. Harun Kütahya stated that stem cells have the potential to transform into all kinds of cells, and due to this feature, stem cells can sometimes turn into a bone-like tissue other than cartilage. It can make the area that has worn out or lost its properties healthy again. For example, it turns into bone in the bone area. It turns into cartilage between cartilage. When applied to the area where there is muscle, it can turn into muscle. In short, whichever tissue it is applied to, it can repair and restore that tissue.”

Op. Dr. Harun Kütahya said that stem cell therapy is one of the most effective methods in joint calcification, stem cells taken from the patient are applied to the patient again, and a healing, tissue-repairing effect is seen in the early stage of calcification. Informing that stem cell application is also used for cartilage repair, Op. Dr. Harun Kütahya continued as follows: “Stem cell therapy is also applied in patients who have undergone meniscus repair. After the meniscus tear is sutured, stem cell application to that area increases the quality of the suture and accelerates healing. Stem cell application can also be performed in ankle cartilage problems. It has an effect that can increase the possibility of healing there as well. In addition, stem cell therapy is used to increase the repair ability in muscle tendon complaints and after tendon ruptures.”
