Stating that the incidence of some diseases in children increases due to the heat in the summer months, Dr. Faculty Member Muhammed Talha Karadoğan said, “Although summer diarrhea can be seen in all age groups, it can be more serious in the child age group.”
Erzincan Mengücek Gazi Training and Research Hospital Pediatrics Department Dr. Faculty Member Muhammed Talha Karadoğan talked about summer diarrhea and its treatment, which is frequently seen in children.
Stating that diarrhea occurs as a result of an increase in the liquid content of the stool with various different factors, softening its consistency and increasing the amount of defecation, Dr. Karadoğan said:
“Although people generally think that diarrhea cases occur in winter, serious diarrhea cases are also seen in summer. Consumption of unhygienic foods, washing foods with unclean water, swallowing pool and sea water in places where you go during summer vacation, consuming spoiled foods due to heat are some of the reasons we can count.
Although summer diarrhea can be seen in all age groups, it can be more serious in children. The reason for this is that in children, especially in some age groups, feeding reluctance and fluid losses are higher. Diarrhea is a common symptom of gastroenteritis, a gastrointestinal disease. Other common findings include abdominal pain, vomiting, high fever, increase in the amount of liquid in the stool, increase in the frequency of defecation, urgent need to defecate, weakness.
During these periods, families should especially avoid storing food in hot places, food should be consumed without waiting for a long time after it is prepared, repeated heating and consumption of prepared and cooled foods should be avoided, food should be stored indoors, care should be taken to ensure that children are in these areas under parental control to prevent children from swallowing sea and pool water as much as possible, personal care and hygiene of babies and children should be ensured, care should be taken to ensure that drinking water is clean and safe, and plenty of fluids should be consumed.
When a child develops persistent diarrhea accompanied by other gastroenteritis symptoms, families should immediately consult a pediatrician for examination. Because in these cases, children may lose a significant amount of fluid and their vital functions may be affected. When timely intervention and appropriate treatments are started, it is easier and faster to prevent unwanted situations.”
