SANKO University Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery Head Prof. Dr. Göktürk Maralcan said that hyperthyroidism can cause progressive or intense destructive discomfort and cardiac damage if left untreated.
Prof. Dr. Maralcan stated that hyperthyroidism, popularly known as toxic goiter, is a clinical condition caused by high levels of thyroid hormones in the blood.
Pointing out that the symptoms of hyperthyroidism are palpitations, increased sweating, irritability, hair loss, tremors, weight loss, heat intolerance, muscle weakness and fatigue, increased intestinal motility, frequent urination, menstrual irregularities and difficulties in conceiving, Prof. Dr. Maralcan said. Maralcan listed the findings noticed by the patient and detected by the physician and said, “Goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland), tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, hot moist skin, murmur and humming sound on the thyroid, cardiac murmur, gynecomastia (benign, excessive breast development in men), fixed gaze, inability of the upper eyelid to follow the downward gaze of the eye, exophthalmos (protrusion of the eyes forward).”
Prof. Dr. Maralcan, grouping the diseases that cause hyperthyroidism, “Causes arising from the thyroid gland, Graves' Disease, toxic adenoma, toxic multinodular goiter, hyperthyroidism caused by the use of the drug Amiodarone as causes other than the thyroid gland, pregnancy, pituitary tumors secreting TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), tumors secreting human chorionic gonadotropin, artificially induced, stimulated hyperthyroidism (Jod-Basedow effect)”.
Prof. Dr. Maralcan stated that hyperthyroidism treatment is performed with antithyroid drugs, radioactive iodine and surgical methods and said, “If hyperthyroidism is not treated, it can cause progressive or intense destructive discomfort and cardiac damage in the body in general.”
Reminding that hyperthyroidism surgery is applied in Graves' Disease, toxic adenoma, toxic multinodular goiter, toxic nodular disease in case of suspicion of malignancy, Prof. Dr. Maralcan said, “Hyperthyroidism surgery is significantly satisfactory. Patients find healing in a short time. Eye findings may occur in Graves' Disease. This is called exophthalmos. Surgical treatment should be preferred especially if advanced exophthalmos has occurred. After this surgery, eye symptoms may regress in some patients. The incidence of thyroid cancer in nodular goiter patients with hyperthyroidism is around 2-4 percent.”
