Siirt Training and Research Hospital Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Faculty Member Mehmet Selim Mamiş, while wishing the new semester to bring success and health to teachers and students, emphasized that a healthy teacher can provide more efficient education to his students. Mamiş stated that especially the health of teachers directly affects the quality of education. Drawing attention to common health problems such as upper respiratory tract infections, Mamiş stated that viruses can spread rapidly in crowded environments with the opening of schools, and said that classrooms should be regularly ventilated and excessive use of air conditioners should be avoided.
Mamiş also mentioned that teachers should take care of their vocal health and said, “I wish the 2024-2025 academic year to be auspicious for our esteemed teachers and successful for our young people, children and little ones. Of course, health is the beginning of everything. It is inconvenient for our teachers to stay standing for a long time professionally or to sit for a long time when they need to sit. In terms of upper respiratory tract infections, the entry of new students into a crowded environment, the entry of different microbial agents into the same environment carries a great risk for both young people, children and other employees in the university environment. As a matter of course, we recommend that the classrooms should be frequently ventilated, that the air conditioners should not be kept on for a long time in order to keep the classrooms cool and not too hot, that the seats should not be directly opposite the air conditioner, and that our teachers should drink at least one glass of warm water sip by sip as much as possible between classes. Teachers who have to give lectures may develop swelling in their vocal cords, which we call edema, and nodules in their vocal cords, similarly, upper respiratory tract infections may cause weakness, malaise, joint pain, runny nose and sneezing. Teachers should not stand or sit for long periods of time. Instead of talking all the time, it should be ensured that the time is put into silence in their favor in the form of interactive education by giving students the right from time to time between classes or in the middle of the lesson. They should pay attention to eating breakfast, teachers with herniated discs should not stay on their feet for a long time, the risk of varicose veins increases in those who stay on their feet for a long time, and those with varicose veins should not forget that as the standing time increases, varicose veins may become more pronounced and reach levels that cannot be regulated not with medication, but perhaps even with surgery.
