At the 15th Congress of the Coordination Association of Organ Transplant Organizations of Turkey, hosted by Gaziantep University (GAUN), a program was organized to draw attention to organ transplantation during the session of Op. Dr. Cahit Dinler.
GAUN Faculty Member Murat Taner Gülşen, Samsun Organ and Tissue Transplant Coordinator Dr. Mehmet Kazak, Ministry of Health Turkey coordinator Assoc. Dr. Erkan Ölçücüoğlu, Gaziantep provincial Mufti Hüseyin Hazırlar, academicians and students attended the session.
Giving information about organ transplantation, GAUN Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Murat Taner Gülşen said that informing has an important role in the dissemination of transplants.
Stating that donation is an important factor in transplants, Prof. Dr. Gülşen said: “Although some experiments are being carried out for the alternative of organ transplantation treatment that we use in the treatment of some chronic and fatal diseases, none of them work as efficiently as the organ transplanted from another person. The most important message of the organ transplant meeting is that we need to make people aware of organ donation until there is not a single household that is not aware of it. In order to achieve this, we should make an all-hands-on-deck effort with bureaucrats, religious officials, and the press as well as healthcare professionals.”
Samsun Organ and Tissue Transplant Coordinator Dr. Mehmet Kazak said, “Organ donation is something that is very important for people who are waiting for organ donation, but it is something that people who are in it and living can know. People who have experienced it understand what it is. Nearly 5-6 thousand organ transplants are performed in Turkey. Many activities are carried out in the regions. Each region has different dynamics and problems. Everyone makes a lot of effort. Anyone over 18 can donate their organs. In this sense, we apply some standards in organ donation. Many efforts are being made to increase donation. One word from people who shape the society can sometimes lead to thousands of donations. There is also a negative side to this. Even a scene in a TV series turns all our efforts upside down.”
