Op. Dr. Zekiye Kabaş from the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases explained what should be known about rhinoplasty.
Op. Dr. Zekiye Kabaş from the Department of Ear, Nose, Nose and Throat Diseases at Memorial Antalya Hospital said that a surgical application suitable for the skin and nose structure of the person is of great importance without neglecting the nasal function in rhinoplasty. Pointing out that each person's eyes, chin, cheekbones, face width, face length and neck are different from each other, Kabaş said, “Therefore, the nose should be made in accordance with the person's facial measurements. After rhinoplasty surgeries, complaints such as “my nose fell, my nose slipped, it curved to the right and left, I could not breathe comfortably through my nose” may occur. To prevent this from happening, nasal surgery should be planned and performed by considering the shape of the nose that may occur in the future. If the area called nasal tip drop, that is, the septum structure, is not left intact, there may be postoperative misfortunes. For this reason, it is very important to apply to experts experienced in rhinoplasty.”
“The decision is made according to the patient's needs”
Stating that Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery performed to change the external shape (appearance) of the nose, and Septoplasty is a surgery performed to correct the curvatures in the structure called septum, Kabaş stated that septorhinoplasty surgery is performed by combining these two surgeries according to the needs of the patient. Regarding the patients who need rhinoplasty surgery, Kabaş said, “It is performed on those who are dissatisfied with the shape of the nose, those who experience nasal congestion due to internal and external nasal disorders, those who need to correct the parts of congenital anomalies related to the nose, those who need to correct the disorders in the shape and function of the nose after previous septoplasty or rhinoplasty surgeries or trauma to the face. The expectations and wishes of the patient are discussed between the surgeon and the patient and surgical options are evaluated. The patient is informed about the risks and consequences of the surgery.”
“It should be personalized”
Emphasizing that there should be a personalized approach in rhinoplasty, Kabaş said, “It is necessary to perform nose surgery according to the skin and nose structure of the person without neglecting the nasal function along with aesthetics. Each person's eyes, chin, cheekbones, face width, face length and neck are different from each other. The nose should also be personalized. In other words, in rhinoplasty surgery; It should be aimed to make a natural and aesthetic nose that is compatible with facial contours and provides more comfortable breathing. In aesthetic surgeries, it is very important for the patient to be in agreement with the doctor and to enter the surgery by making sure that the doctor fully understands their wishes. Before the surgery, the patient's nose is examined inside and outside. Nasal photographs are taken, whether there are additional diseases, previous nose surgeries, habits such as smoking and alcohol, and the medications used are learned. Blood thinners and some painkillers should be stopped 1 week before surgery.”
“It can be done in every season”
Noting that rhinoplasty is performed with 2 methods as closed and open, Op. Dr. Zekiye Kabaş continued her words as follows: “Closed technique is performed by entering through the nostrils. There is no scar at the tip of the nose, the sense of nasal sensation is preserved. In open technique rhinoplasty, a small incision is made at the tip of the nose and the skin covering the nose is removed. The bone and cartilage tissues in the nose are reshaped and the nose gets its new aesthetic appearance. Rhinoplasty takes an average of 3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Patients are usually discharged the same day or 1 day later. This surgery can be performed in all seasons. You should be careful about going out in the sun in summer and sunscreen should be used.”
“It heals quickly within 2 weeks”
Kabaş stated that the severity of swelling and bruising around the eyes in the first days after surgery varies according to skin color and thickness, and said, “The next day, swelling and edema may develop with bruising, especially spreading to the lower eyelids and mid-face. These heal rapidly within 2 weeks after the tampon is removed. The sense of smell returns within 8-10 days after the nasal tampons are removed. Nasal breathing is possible before bruising and swelling heal. The plaster on the back of the nose is removed between 7 and 10 days depending on the patient's condition.”
“Smoking damages the healing process”
Emphasizing that smoking has a negative effect on the healing process, Kabaş said, “If smoking is used after surgery, it is requested to reduce and quit as much as possible. Because smoking narrows the nasal vessels, increases edema and consequently damages the healing process. It is recommended not to smoke for at least 3 months. Postoperative evaluations are performed at the 1st month, 3rd month, 6th month and 1st year. It may take time for the nasal skin to settle in the first 1 month or even 2 months in some patients. For this reason, the edematous appearance may continue as blood circulation and lymphatic circulation will continue to regulate. Although the exact shape of the nose varies from person to person, the evaluation of the 1st year result is suitable for an objective evaluation.”
