Stating that more skin problems are seen in winter than in summer, Dermatology Specialist Dr. Ümit Bostancı said, “In autumn and winter, dry skin and widespread itching on the skin, oily eczema, psoriasis, irritation eczema, hives and pernio problems can be encountered.”
Medicana Bursa Hospital Dermatology Specialist Dr. Ümit Bostancı, who stated that with the cooling of the weather in the autumn months, an increase in skin dryness and severe itching that increases at night may occur in the arms, legs, abdomen and back area, mostly in middle-aged and older people, said, “Unless the skin dryness is not removed, the anti-itch medications given do not work very well. The only way to eliminate dry skin is to moisturize the dry areas regularly with creams. Do not bathe with hot water, do not scrub the skin too much and moisturize the whole body with creams after bathing. It is a type of eczema that affects areas such as the scalp, face, external auditory canal, behind the ears and can cause redness, crusting and itching in the relevant areas. Significant exacerbations can be seen in the winter months with the effect of cold weather, decreased sunlight and increased stress. It should be protected from cold wind, moisturizers and treatment creams that are not too oily recommended by dermatologists should be used regularly.”
Stating that psoriasis is an ongoing skin disease that lasts a lifetime, Bostancı said, “It is characterized by dryness and crusts on any part of our body or very commonly. The disease, which tends to improve with the effect of intense sun rays in the summer months, may show exacerbations and increases in the winter months due to decreasing sun rays, increasing stress levels, and increasing upper respiratory tract infections. In winter, it is necessary to make the most of the sun's rays in sunny weather. In order to reduce stress levels, it will be useful to walk and do sports in open sunny weather. In cases where the symptoms of the disease increase, it is useful to be examined by a dermatologist. With the cooling of the weather, both cold windy weather and cold water can trigger hand irritation eczema. Symptoms such as dryness, itching, redness and cracking appear on the hands. Hands should be protected from cold air and water, hands should not be washed with cold water, cotton-lined gloves should be worn while washing dishes to protect them from detergents and cold water. Moisturizing creams should be applied to the hands after water contact. Glycerin soaps or soap-free washing gels or foams can be used while washing hands.”
Bostancı stated that cold-induced hives are characterized by itchy rashes and blisters that occur on the skin as a result of contact with substances such as cold water, cold air, ice, and said, “Cold protection and some allergy medications are used in the treatment. As a result of exposure to cold in the winter months, itchy, painful redness and blisters are seen in extreme areas such as hands, feet, nose and auricles. It continues especially during winter.
