“There was an increase in hip pain after the pandemic”

Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Hakan Başaran stated that there has been an increase in complaints of hip pain after coronavirus.

Prof. Dr. Serdar Hakan Başaran made a written statement stating that the number of people experiencing hip pain in the society increased after the coronavirus. In the statement, it was stated that ongoing fatigue and weakness trigger hip disorders by affecting mobility and muscle strength.

“The disease can worsen hip arthritis”

Noting that coronavirus can also cause joint inflammation, joint pain and stiffness, Prof. Dr. Serdar Hakan Başaran said, “The disease can also worsen hip arthritis or trigger new forms of arthritis, leading to long-term hip pain. Disease-related clotting problems or impaired blood flow due to steroid use can cause 'avascular necrosis' in the hip, that is, bone death. Neuropathic pain caused by potential nerve damage associated with the coronavirus can affect the hip region. Again, stress, anxiety and depression associated with the disease can be physical symptoms, including pain.”

“It can cause night pains”

Pointing out that hip pain after coronavirus, especially in the case of avascular necrosis, is mild at first, Başaran said, “First of all, the disease starts as mild pain and limitation in movements. In later periods, it can cause throbbing night pains. If the pain is neglected, it causes severe restriction in hip movements and pain radiating from the groin area to the inner side of the knee. The patient may have difficulty climbing up and down stairs.”

“We resort to imaging methods”

Başaran said that if there is pain in the hip and it does not go away for a while, it is necessary to consult a physician, “When the patient applies to us, we first take his/her history. Then we apply imaging methods. Among the imaging methods, especially MRI can show us the deterioration in hip nutrition and bone death in the hip bone. And we can easily make the diagnosis at an early stage with these. In later stages, it becomes visible even with hip X-rays.”

“Treatment is organized according to the stage of the disease”

Stating that the treatment is regulated according to the stage of the disease, Prof. Dr. Serdar Hakan Başaran said, “We give medication and rest to mild patients. We do physical therapy if necessary. In more advanced cases, channels or holes can be made through a small incision in the hip knob to reduce the pressure due to edema and encourage the formation of new vessels. This surgery can help reduce pain and improve function in early-stage avascular neurosis, but its effectiveness decreases in more advanced cases. In some cases, it can delay the need for a more extensive surgery such as hip replacement.”

“Hip replacement is applied if the shape of the hip knob deteriorates and calcification occurs”

Emphasizing that hip prosthesis is applied in cases where the shape of the hip knob deteriorates and calcification occurs, Başaran said, “Also known as hip arthroplasty, it is a surgical procedure to remove damaged or diseased parts of the hip joint and replace them with artificial components (prostheses). This surgery is often performed to relieve pain and improve function in patients with arthritis, avascular necrosis or severe hip fractures. Hip replacement surgery can significantly reduce pain and improve mobility, allowing many patients to return to their daily activities and enjoy a better quality of life. However, as with any surgery, there can be risks such as infection, blood clots and prosthesis wear over time.”
