“Breast cancer affects 2.3 million women worldwide”

Stating that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in our country and in the world, Ünye State Hospital Chief Physician Dr. Yılmaz Dündar said, “Breast cancer occurs with the uncontrolled proliferation of cells in the breast tissue. On February 4, 2021, the World Health Organization announced that breast cancer has risen to the first place as 11.7 percent of all newly diagnosed cancers. Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held annually in October, aims to promote screening and prevention of the disease, which affects 2.3 million women worldwide. In October, awareness and information activities around the world use the pink ribbon theme. The aim of these activities is to support people diagnosed with breast cancer, including meta-static breast cancer, to educate and raise awareness about breast cancer risk factors, to know personal breast cancer risks and to emphasize the importance of regular screening starting at an appropriate age, and to raise awareness about the need for more support and research on the disease.”

Stating that breast cancers detected in the early stages are both successful in their treatment and significantly improve the quality of life, Dündar said: “As with all cancers, the risk of breast cancer can be reduced by the consumption of foods rich in vegetables and fruits, prepared on appropriate grounds, the establishment of healthy eating habits, increasing physical activity, being at a healthy weight, avoiding smoking and alcohol use. Since there are many studies showing that breastfeeding protects against breast cancer, it is recommended that all mothers breastfeed their babies for at least 2 years.”
