Turkish scientist receives prestigious award in Japan

International Society of Plastic Regenerative Surgeons Delegate in Turkey Prof. Dr. Eray Copcu's treatment for tissue regeneration, developed by the 3rd place in the Sydney Coleman Best Scientific Study Competition held in Tokyo.

Prof. Dr. Eray Copcu represented Turkey at the meeting of regenerative surgeons and biological products held with the participation of 4 international associations and 2,500 doctors in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. International Society of Plastic Regenarative Surgeons (International Society of Plastic Regenerative Surgeons), Turkey Delegate Copcu announced his 4 studies to the international medical world at the meeting and chaired a session. The study developed by Copcu for the regeneration and healing of cells was also awarded 3rd place in the Sydney Coleman Best Scientific Study Competition within the scope of the organization. In the competition, where 12 candidates selected from hundreds of scientific works from around the world were evaluated, Copcu's work on tissue regeneration, including “the use of exosome therapies in regenerative medicine”, was the only clinical study to be ranked.


Cell-free cell therapy

Prof. Copcu stated in his statement that the world has developed very rapidly, especially after the coronavirus epidemic and the technology 5.0 revolution, and that medicine has adapted very quickly to these developments.

Pointing out that regenerative medicine applications, which aim to develop new and living tissues that can replace damaged tissues through stem cell therapies, have replaced drug treatment in the new era, Copcu emphasized that they aim for a 90-year-old individual to reach the healing power of a baby in the womb thanks to the application.

Copcu pointed out that when a small amount of fat tissue to be taken from the individual is combined with exosome, it is possible to reach the perfect healing opportunity in the womb, and said, “Having this in an elderly individual will be a remedy for many conditions that seem impossible to treat. This can be considered a paradigm-changing development.”


Cell-free cell therapies

Stating that the most popular application within the scope of regenerative medicine is exosome applications today, Prof. Copcu said, “These extracellular vesicles, 40-120 nanometers in size, serve as intercellular communication and cargo. For the regeneration of the tissue, these are actually cell-free cell therapies derived from stem cells. Because they do not contain any cells, they contain many proteins.”

Copcu stated that exosome therapies, which carry the characteristics of the cell, have been used very rapidly in recent years, and explained that natural exosomes can be taken from cells taken from humans, animals and plants, while engineered exosomes (induced mesenchymal cells) can be obtained in the laboratory with very high technology.

Eray Copcu stated that in his award-winning study, a small amount of adipose tissue taken from the person was combined with an engineered exosome and given back to the patient, providing healing and repair.


2 new developments in the medical literature

Stating that 2 new developments entered the literature with the regenerative medicine approach he developed, Copcu gave the following technical information:

“One of them is that by selectively removing the fat in the adipose tissue with ultra-sharp blades called Adinizer, for the first time, he isolated the structure called extra cellular matrix (ECM) from adipose tissue, which controls the healing, proliferation and movement of cells in the body, and this process is called de-parenchinization. Secondly, by fusing the exosomes obtained from iMSCs to this deparenchymized ECM, autologization was achieved. These 2 concepts have entered the literature for the first time.”
