Denizli Private Egekent Hospital Medical Oncology Specialist Dr. Nail Özhan made important warnings about the negative effects of sun exposure. In his statement, Dr. Nail Özhan said, “Since the harmful UV rays of the sun are stronger in the summer months, the risk of skin cancer increases. Sun exposure, especially prolonged and unprotected sunbathing, can increase the risk of skin cancer. Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer encountered in the society. For this reason, sunscreen cream should be used when going out in the summer months and if possible, sun exposure should be avoided when the sun is at its peak (midday hours). In addition to sunscreen application when going out, long-sleeved clothes and pants, wide-brimmed hats should be tried to be worn as much as possible.”
“Consult a doctor as soon as you notice a change”
Pointing out that although skin cancer is usually seen on the face, neck and hands, which are the light-colored areas of the skin, it can also occur in other parts of the body, Dr. Nail Özhan emphasized the importance of protecting and regularly checking all parts of the body exposed to the sun. Özhan listed the measures to be taken to prevent skin cancer as follows:
“The most effective way to prevent skin cancer is to protect from the sun and have regular skin checks. In addition, measures such as using sunscreen, wearing hats and glasses also play an important role in reducing the risk of skin cancer. It should not be forgotten that early diagnosis saves lives. For this reason, when any changes in the skin are noticed, a doctor should be consulted immediately.”
