Urology Specialist Operator Doctor Kemal Ertaş warned against prostate cancer.
Memorial Diyarbakır Hospital Urology Specialist Operator Doctor Kemal Ertaş said that prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer in men in Turkey. Ertaş said, “We can say that prostate cancer has become more common in developed countries with industrialization and may become the most common male disease in the next 10 years. Therefore, it is important to raise awareness about prostate cancer. Early diagnosis is important in prostate cancer and it is a preventable type of cancer. For this purpose, we perform Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test for our patients. It is important for men after the age of 40-50 to have a PSA test every year.”
Explaining that prostate cancer can be detected in four stages, Dr. Ertaş continued his explanations as follows:
“In the first two stages, cancer is limited to the tissue and can be completely removed by surgical intervention, but in the third and fourth stages, cancer can spread to surrounding tissues and distant organs, we can say that the chance of success of surgical treatment is much less. In this case, methods such as hormone therapy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy come into play and these treatments have a lower chance of success.”
Dr. Ertaş emphasized that the risk of prostate cancer increases with aging and therefore regular screening and early diagnosis are important.
