Vaccines protect both children and public health

Pediatrician Aysel Açıkgözoğlu reminded that many serious diseases such as tuberculosis, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis, polio can be prevented by vaccination, and stated that there are vaccines that are not yet included in the routine vaccination calendar and are preferred by parents. Uzm. Dr. Açıkgözoğlu said, “Rotavirus (diarrhea), meningococcal (meningitis) and HPV (cervical cancer) vaccines should not be neglected.”

Acıbadem Kent Hospital Pediatrics Specialist Dr. Aysel Açıkgözoğlu pointed out the importance of vaccinations against childhood diseases in terms of public health and emphasized that vaccines are indispensable for healthy generations.

Stating that babies are protected against many diseases with antibodies from the mother before birth and with breast milk after birth, Uzm. Dr. Açıkgözoğlu said, “However, this is temporary” and said the following about the benefits of vaccines:

“The Ministry of Health publishes a vaccination calendar every year so that babies and children can obtain immunity against certain diseases. When parents ensure that the vaccines included in this calendar are administered, they protect their children from many infectious diseases that are so important that they can pose a life risk. In our country, routine vaccinations are given against 13 diseases in childhood. These are tetanus, polio, measles, rubella, mumps, chickenpox, diphtheria, whooping cough, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, H. influenzae type B, tuberculosis and pneumococcus. Thanks to vaccines, many serious diseases such as tuberculosis, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, whooping cough, hepatitis and polio can be prevented in children in our country as in the whole world today. In this sense, it is of great importance that parents are conscious and aware of vaccines. In our country, the Ministry of Health offers free vaccines to all children, as well as special vaccines that are left to the choice of parents. It should not be forgotten that vaccines help babies gain immunity and protect them from diseases, and special vaccines should not be neglected.”


Meningococcal, Rotavirus, HPV vaccines are also recommended

Stating that new vaccines are being developed against various infectious diseases every day thanks to the developments emerging with medical research, Uzm. Dr. Açıkgözoğlu said, “There are vaccines that are not yet included in the vaccination program. One of them is Rotavirus vaccine. Rotavirus is a disease that manifests itself with diarrhea, especially in young children, and leads to hospitalization. The other is the meningococcal vaccine against meningitis. Meningitis is a disease with a risk of permanent disability and death, even with very good treatment. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine is an important factor in preventing genital warts caused by HPV infection and even cervical and penile cancers that may occur in the future.”

Stating that these vaccines should also be administered in certain periods, Dr. Aysel Açıkgözoğlu said, “Meningococcal vaccine against rotavirus and meningitis is administered from the 2nd month. HPV vaccination is administered between the ages of 9-13, in 2 doses at 6-month intervals.”
