Cardiology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Ünlü, one of the doctors of Private Ümit Batıkent Hospital, informed about Coronary CT Angiography, known as virtual heart angiography.
Stating that with this special imaging method, it is aimed to detect stenosis in the coronary arteries, the arteries that feed the heart, Cardiology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Ünlü said, “This method, which is performed with a tomography device, does not require hospitalization, is a very safe method and is applied quickly. The time between the patient's hospitalization and discharge is between 15-20 minutes.”
Who is the method applied to?
Stating that they recommend virtual heart angiography to patients with multiple risk factors, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ünlü said, “These are; patients with diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, smokers, family history of ischemic heart disease and chest pain.”
“We mostly recommend it to patients in the medium risk group”
Stating that the mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases are determined by questioning the risk factors after the interview, Ünlü said, “Each patient falls into a certain risk group. The procedures and treatments applied to patients differ according to low, medium and high risk groups. We recommend this technique mostly to patients in the medium risk group. Since iodized contrast material is given to the patient in this procedure, patients need to have a blood test to evaluate their kidney function before the procedure.”
“Scanning is done in 2-3 seconds”
Stating that the procedure itself and the time during the shooting varies between 2-4 minutes, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Ünlü continued his words as follows:
“When the dyed substance given to the vein reaches the heart, the shooting starts and the heart is scanned in about 2-3 seconds, then a 3D animation of the heart is created by radiology specialists using artificial intelligence. With this image, it is seen whether there is stenosis, calcification in the vessels, whether there is a congenital anomaly. There is a membrane around the heart, virtual heart angiography is an effective and reliable method in the diagnosis and follow-up of its diseases. In addition, in some congenital heart diseases, our external closure treatments are a very reliable method in determining the degree and type of the disease before surgery.”
