Vitamin D is essential to prevent osteoporosis

Dr. Mustafa Özer, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist at Tavas State Hospital, gave information about Osteoporosis, popularly known as osteoporosis. Explaining the ways to prevent the disease, Uzm. Dr. Mustafa Özer said, “Bone stores need to be filled with calcium, so vitamin D is very important.”


Stating that osteoporosis causes the bones to become more fragile due to the loss of calcium and other minerals and increases the risk of fractures, Tavas State Hospital Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Dr. Mustafa Özer said, “Osteoporosis is a common health problem that causes millions of people worldwide to experience bone fractures every year. Especially women over the age of 50 are at high risk for osteoporosis. According to a study conducted in our country in 2024, when people over the age of 50 are evaluated, osteoporosis is detected in one out of every three women, while this rate is one out of every five men. Because osteoporosis is so common, early diagnosis and treatment is of great importance. It is possible to reduce the risk of osteoporosis with a healthy diet, regular exercise and necessary supplements. A diet rich in calcium and vitamin D plays an important role in protecting bone health.”

Stating that the most common symptoms of osteoporosis are back and lower back pain, shortened height and increased bone fractures, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist. Dr. Mustafa Özer said, “Since the symptoms are seen in advanced stages, regular bone density checks should be performed and necessary precautions should be taken. In particular, it is important for citizens at high risk, namely women who have entered menopause, older people, those with low calcium and vitamin D levels, and those who use long-term cortisone medication to have annual bone measurements even if there are no symptoms.”

Explaining that DEXA, medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests and X-ray examinations are important in the diagnosis of osteoporosis, Uz. Dr. Mustafa Özer stated that DEXA scan confirms the presence of osteoporosis by measuring bone mineral density, while laboratory tests and imaging techniques help to evaluate other health problems and fracture risk. Explaining the ways to prevent osteoporosis, Uz. Dr. Özer said, “Bone stores need to be filled with calcium, so vitamin D is very important. The biggest source of vitamin D is the sun. Care should be taken to consume foods such as feta cheese, milk and yogurt. In addition, walking and exercises should be done to keep the muscle mass supporting the bones strong. When spinal fractures develop in advanced osteoporosis, surgery can be used to relieve pain and strengthen the bones. Quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, eating a calcium-rich diet and exercising regularly will help prevent the progression of osteoporosis.”
