Warning from ENT specialist: “Headache and tinnitus may be caused by jaw joint disorder”

Experts emphasize that jaw joint disorders, which are among the common disorders today, are twice as common in women compared to men. These conditions are characterized by limited jaw movements, pain and sound in the joint. Clicking sound coming from the jaw joint, stiffness felt in the morning and occasional locking of the jaw are among the common symptoms.”


Stress and teeth clenching are the most important causes

Stating that jaw joint disorders can be caused by many factors, Kuran emphasized that stress, especially teeth clenching or grinding, misalignment of teeth, traumas, poor posture and overuse of jaw muscles are among the most common causes. Assoc. Prof. Kuran said that slipped discs in the joint and joint inflammations are also among the causes of the disease.


Attention to tinnitus and headache

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökhan Kuran stated that jaw joint disorders are usually manifested by pain, limitation in jaw movements, chewing difficulties, clicking sound from the jaw and ringing in the ear. Stating that individuals who feel stiffness in the jaw, experience locking in the jaw and have difficulty chewing, especially in the morning, may have such a disorder, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kuran noted that these symptoms can be seen with constant pain or headache in the jaw joint.


Treatment method varies according to the cause

Underlining that jaw joint disorders are treatable and should be treated early, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökhan Kuran said, “The treatment of these disorders varies according to the underlying cause. First, hot-cold compresses, soft diet and stress management are recommended to relax the jaw muscles and reduce stress. For those who have a habit of clenching teeth, the use of night plates is recommended. Physical therapy is an effective method for strengthening the jaw muscles and increasing their flexibility. In advanced cases, if there is damage to the joint that cannot be corrected by other procedures, other treatment options are recommended.
