Karya Farma HBX R&D team, which has been operating in Aydın Adnan Menderes University (ADÜ) Teknokent and has been researching the effects of endemic plants and natural foods on human health for nearly 20 years and has come to the fore with 17 specific and strategic patents, conducted a study on grapes and their seeds. The team investigated the potential role of grapes in cancer prevention and treatment and recommended consuming grapes with their seeds.
Karya Farma HBX R&D Scientific Board Member Chemist Aslı Aktaş stated that grapes are among the foods that are thought to have protective effects against cancer thanks to the antioxidants, flavonoids, polyphenols and other biologically active components it contains, as well as being a widely consumed fruit worldwide. “Grape seeds are a rich source of proanthocyanidins known for their powerful antioxidant properties. These antioxidants help reduce cell damage by fighting free radicals in the body. Grape seed consumption supports heart health, improves skin health and boosts the immune system. It also contributes to reducing the risk of chronic diseases thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties.”
“Grape seeds turned out to be the enemy of cancer”
Noting that resveratrol, which is abundant in grapes, stands out as one of the most researched components with protective effects against cancer, Chemist Aslı Aktaş said, “According to the results of the studies, especially grape seed, resveratrol exhibits cell proliferation inhibitory, apoptotic (promoting cell death) and anti-angiogenic (inhibiting tumor blood supply) properties in various cancer types such as breast, prostate, colon and skin cancers. This component can inhibit the growth and spread of cancer cells by stopping the cell cycle. In addition, grape seed extract (GSE) shows toxic effects on cancer cells and has the potential to kill these cells without harming healthy cells. This shows that grape seeds have promising results on cancers.” He recommended consuming grapes with their seeds.
Noting that they have seen that grapes have great potential as a natural anticancer agent in their studies, Aktaş said that resveratrol and other polyphenolic components in grapes draw attention with their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and apoptotic effects that inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
