Warning from the expert: Beware of the dangers of hepatitis B and C

Kırıkkale Provincial Health Director Dr. Murat Ağırtaş stated that there are different types of hepatitis and especially hepatitis B and C can lead to chronic liver diseases and emphasized that the most effective way to prevent hepatitis B is vaccination. He also drew attention to the importance of taking protective measures against transmission routes and obtaining information by applying to health institutions in order to protect against hepatitis.

Kırıkkale Provincial Health Director Dr. Murat Ağırtaş stated that July 28 was designated as “World Hepatitis Day” and emphasized that hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver and can occur due to many reasons. Dr. Ağırtaş said that there are different types of hepatitis viruses (A, B, C, D and E) and especially hepatitis B, C and D can lead to chronic liver diseases.

Stating that hepatitis A virus can be easily transmitted under poor hygiene conditions and that the infection, which passes with mild symptoms in childhood, can be more severe in older ages, Dr. Ağırtaş explained that hepatitis B and C viruses are transmitted through uncontrolled blood transfusions, unsterilized surgical materials, shared razor blades and toothbrushes.


Dr. Ağırtaş stated that the most effective way to protect against hepatitis B is vaccination, while there is no vaccine for hepatitis C yet, but treatment is possible. Hepatitis D virus can only cause disease in people with hepatitis B infection and hepatitis E virus is usually transmitted through contaminated water and unhygienic food.

Finally, Dr. Ağırtaş emphasized the importance of taking protective measures against transmission routes other than vaccination to prevent hepatitis and noted that getting information and raising awareness by applying to health institutions is an important step in the prevention and control of viral hepatitis.
