Making a statement due to the November 3-9 Organ and Tissue Donation Week, Niğde Ömer Halisdemir Training and Research Hospital Organ Transplant Specialist Anesthesiologist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kaçmaz stated that there is a well-functioning organ transplant system in Turkey and said, “According to urgency and order, whoever is in the first place is given the tissue and organ that fits. It is not possible to make any other application here in any way.”
The Organ and Tissue Donation Unit of Niğde Provincial Health Directorate opened a stand during the November 3-9 Organ and Tissue Donation Week, explaining the importance of organ and tissue donation and encouraging citizens to donate. Making a statement at the stand opened at Ömer Halisdemir University Training and Research Hospital, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kaçmaz said, “In our country, donations are mostly made from living donors. People do not hesitate to donate their kidneys and liver to their relatives, but the main thing is the cadaver donor. Because after the brain death of a person, it is not possible for this person to continue life anyway, and 5-6 people can hold on to life with the organs we will receive from the cadaver donor.”
“We are in a very good place in the world in donor transplants”
Kaçmaz also clarified some common misconceptions about organ donation and said, “When a person donates his/her organs, when he/she fills out this donation card, the organ is not taken from him/her in any way whatsoever. There are many methods. The person must be brain dead, the consent of the family is required even if he fills out the form himself, and it can be taken after a board has made an opinion and there is a ranking of need in the system of our ministry in our country. According to the urgency and order, whoever is in the first place is given the tissue and organ. It is not possible to make any other application here. We actually have a very well functioning organ transplant system. We are really in a very good place in the world in transplants from living donors. We are at a very advanced point medically in organ transplantation and we can perform quality transplants, but we still have a problem with deceased donor transplants.”
Stating that there are over 25 thousand kidney, over 2 thousand 500 heart and over 1 thousand 500 other organ transplant patients in Turkey, Kaçmaz invited citizens to be more conscious and sensitive about organ donation.
