Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Metin Genç and his wife Arzu Genç attended the conference called 'If a Parent Wakes Up, Society Wakes Up' at Hamamizade İhsanbey Cultural Center.
Speaking here, Genç said, “We are making many efforts. As a requirement of the responsibility we take, we are trying to raise the standard of living of our people, we serve. But this issue is perhaps an issue that we need to emphasize much more than these works and we need to reveal a social awareness. Because this issue concerns mental and physical health. It also concerns public health in general. Therefore, it is a very important issue. In other words, it is not an issue where we can just say that the individual should bear the consequences of his/her own choice and put the responsibility of that choice on him/her. Because public health is more important than anything else.”
Pointing out that stricter steps should be taken on the issue, Genç said, “In order to take more steps, both local administrators, school administrators, families, associations, non-governmental organizations, mukhtars, municipal council members, we all need to embrace this work more tightly. Because indeed, a society can become a better society with its physical health, mental health and overall community health. In this sense, we are a little more advantageous. Because we have a tighter understanding of the foundation of our society, the foundation of our nation, the greatest power that still keeps us standing, which comes from both our faith and civilization around the concept of family. In this sense, we are different from Europe. The fight against addiction is a very important issue. Not only drug addiction, but now technology is also an addiction. It takes our children and young people away from us. Therefore, we need to fight all together. It has a very serious economic sector in terms of drug barons. We need to save our children from reaching this scourge with preventive measures. The biggest task here falls to mothers. The biggest narcotic police officer is the mother. Therefore, in that sense, our mothers have great duties and great responsibilities. We are a nation with a neighborhood culture, our mukhtars also have important duties. We can use our advantages better in this struggle. That is why I attach great importance to these meetings and we are always ready to do whatever we can as local administrators in this sense. Because our most important job is the goal of a healthy and happy society. This issue is much more important than many projects we will do.”
