Women entrepreneurs drew attention to the importance of early diagnosis in breast cancer

TOBB Bursa Women Entrepreneurs Board organized an information seminar to raise awareness on breast cancer. In the seminar, important information on the causes, symptoms, importance of early diagnosis, screening methods and cancer treatment were shared.

The Bursa Women Entrepreneurs Board of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), which continues its activities under the coordination of Bursa Commodity Exchange (Bursa TB), organized an “Information and Awareness” seminar in cooperation with Uludağ Oncology Solidarity Association (ONKODAY) and Osmangazi District Health Directorate Cancer Early Diagnosis Screening and Training Center (KETEM) within the scope of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Sabriye Şen, President of TOBB Bursa Women Entrepreneurs Board Executive Committee, made the opening speech of the seminar held at Bursa TB Conference Hall and emphasized that breast cancer is of critical importance for women's health. Drawing attention to the fact that one out of every 8 women gets breast cancer at some point in her life, Şen said, “We should not forget that breast cancer can be treated almost 100 percent thanks to early diagnosis. As TOBB Women Entrepreneurs Board, we see it among our responsibilities to contribute not only to the business world but also to public health. For this reason, we aim to raise the awareness of our women with the seminar we organized.”

Breast cancer is a treatable disease

Bursa Uludag University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Member Dr. Alper Coşkun gave information to the participants about the symptoms, causes of breast cancer and the importance of early diagnosis. Explaining the developments in breast cancer treatment and talking about treatment methods, Coşkun said, “In the past, breast tissue had to be completely removed in surgeries. However, today, thanks to chemotherapy and advanced imaging techniques, we perform breast conserving surgeries. Thanks to education and awareness, breast cancer is a disease that can be diagnosed early and treated.”

The first step in the fight: Self-examination

Prof. Dr. Hicran Yıldız, Faculty Member of Bursa Uludağ University School of Health, drew attention to the importance of breast self-examination. Emphasizing that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women, Yıldız said, “A simple 10 minute examination that every woman can do at home at least once a month plays a major role in the early diagnosis of breast cancer and significantly increases the success of treatment. Let's not forget that awareness brings early diagnosis and early diagnosis brings success in treatment.”

Osmangazi District Health Directorate Healthy Life Center Chronic Diseases Unit Officer Dr. Selen Altındağ also gave information about the free services provided by KETEM. In the seminar, Ayşenur Akın Türkel, Member of İnegöl Women Entrepreneurs Board and also ONKODAY Volunteer, shared her experiences in the fight against breast cancer and emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and morale in the fight against cancer.

The seminar ended with the section where the questions of the participants were answered.
