While heart attacks and heart diseases, which are among the most common causes of death in the world, are now starting to be seen at young ages, there are many reasons that increase the risk of heart attack. Stating that one of these reasons is obesity, Cardiology Physician Uzm. Dr. Veli Gökçe pointed out that cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by choosing a healthy life.
While the cheapest and most painless thing in health systems is to protect people from diseases, treatment methods are more risky and expensive than prevention. Therefore, emphasizing that lifestyle changes have become much more important in cardiology, Specialist from Medicana Konya Hospital Cardiology Department. Prof. Dr. Veli Gökçe explained the ways to protect the heart by living healthy.
“Obesity triggers the heart”
It is known that the number of heart attacks in young people has increased recently. Cardiology Specialist Dr. Veli Gökçe, who noted that obesity should be prevented from obesity first to prevent heart attacks, said that obesity triggers not only cardiovascular diseases but also many chronic diseases. Recommending a Mediterranean-type diet for heart health, Specialist. Dr. Veli Gökçe emphasized that unhealthy nutrition and packaged foods are not good for the heart and continued as follows:
“As the preference for packaged foods replacing organic foods increases, heart attack cases are also on the rise. It is important to consume every fruit and vegetable in season and to consume organic foods made at home instead of packaged foods. Fiber-free and refined foods should not be preferred for heart health. A diet appropriate to calorie, fiber, vitamin and mineral needs should be followed. Ready-to-eat foods should be avoided as much as possible.”
Explaining that in addition to malnutrition, changing living conditions also affect the heart, Uzm. Dr. Veli Gökçe said, “Unhealthy nutrition, inactivity and bad habits such as alcohol and tobacco, which have become widespread due to the pace of daily life, are other important factors that increase the risk of heart attack. With technological developments, easy access to packaged foods, refined processed foods without fiber, and obesity brought about by a sedentary life together with this, are the causes of almost all diseases.”
“30-45 minutes brisk walks are the most basic recommendations”
Noting that regular exercise as well as a healthy diet protects the heart, Uzm. Dr. Veli Gökçe said, “Exercise is important not only for the musculoskeletal system but also for the normalization of cardiac values. Although there are different recommendations, taking 10 thousand steps a day or brisk walks for 30-45 minutes are the most basic recommendations. Of course, other sports and cardio exercises can also be done.”
